War Hero Remembered, Forgotten

2/12/2009

EDGAR, WI – Wayne Cutter, a local retiree, honored the memory of a war hero today and promptly forgot about him less than two minutes later. At 6:32AM, Cutter stumbled upon a small article on a Boy Scout troop’s mission to replace weathered American flags, which reminded the 73-year old that he had forgotten to hang his flag on Veterans Day. “I always like to honor my father and the men he served with,” Cutter said to himself. “There was that fellow he fought alongside that got the Congressional Medal after he stormed a machine gun nest and died in combat. Walter…Walter Grimsley. A real war hero. A patriot. Or was it Helmsley? I wonder if he was related to the Helmsley’s over on 3rd. They have a nice park over there. Real nice park. Although one time a kid on a bicycle came and ran over my toe. Didn’t even stop or…or apologize.” By 6:34AM, Cutter had replaced the war hero’s memory with various musings on slippers, Jeopardy, and what to make for lunch. “I have a box of that instant Stove Top stuffing,” Cutter mumbled as he shuffled from his kitchen table. “That sounds pretty good. And maybe some of that leftover raisin crisp.”
